Glossary of Terms
Key ADA terminology and definitions
A
Accessible: A site, building, facility, or portion thereof that complies with the ADA Standards for Accessible Design.
Auxiliary Aids and Services: Tools or services that ensure effective communication for individuals with vision, hearing, or speech disabilities. Examples include sign language interpreters, screen readers, and Braille materials.
D
Direct Threat: A significant risk of substantial harm to the health or safety of the individual or others that cannot be eliminated or reduced through reasonable accommodation.
Disability: A physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities; a record of such impairment; or being regarded as having such an impairment.
E
Essential Functions: The fundamental job duties of a position that an individual must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation.
I
Interactive Process: An informal, interactive discussion between the employer and the individual with a disability to identify the precise limitations and potential accommodations.
R
Readily Achievable: Easily accomplishable and able to be carried out without much difficulty or expense.
Reasonable Accommodation: Any modification or adjustment to a job, the work environment, or the way things are usually done that enables a qualified individual with a disability to enjoy equal employment opportunities.
U
Undue Hardship: An action requiring significant difficulty or expense when considered in relation to the employer's size, resources, nature, and structure.
